PUVFD was activated at 5:43 pm this evening for a reported furnace fire on Phillips Road in the Jamison area of Pleasant Unity. Arriving Firefighter's found a working fire in the furnace and flue pipe in the basement of a multi-family residential building. A dry chemical extinguisher was utilized on the fuel oil fueled fire and quickly knocked down the flames; however, a fairly significant amount of smoke accumulated in the large basement, the common area and in two of the three apartment units. Firefighters checked for fire extension in the walls and chimney and ventilated smoke from the building. Also assisting Pleasant Unity were firefighters from Mutual, Marguerite, Dryridge, Whitney-Hostetter, Trauger and Youngstown VFD's. There were no injuries and damage was contained to the furnace and flue pipe.
